Chapter 9: Forms of college writing
There are three curricular divisions:
1. Humanities which is human culture past and present.
2. Social sciences: human behavior, societies, and adapted from the natural sciences.
3. Natural and applied sciences: natural sciences are specific aspects of nature, applied sciences are how to use science-based information, understanding concept and develop artifacts.
There are different traits of writing in each division:
1. Humanities:
a. Personal writing which are the writer’s ideas, experiences and feelings.
b. Analyzing a work of art by describing the work, it’s parts, and how they function.
c. Argue a point by persuading reader, points meaning importance and truth.
d. Analyzing a phenomenon by explains meaning, social or natural context.
2. Social sciences:
a. Case study describes and analyze topic, identifies methodology, and give results.
b. Literature review summarizes and evaluates journal article and is usually research based.
c. Analyzing a policy or project analyze topic, history and effects.
d. Describe a process you list materials, steps in the process, and the importance of the process.
3. Natural and applied sciences
a. Lab or experiment report includes clear data, logical analysis, and unbiased reporting.
b. Field report has clear data and unbiased reporting.
c. Literature review summarizes and compares journal articles and is usually research based.
d. Explain a process by describing each step of the process.
