Chapter 4: Drafting

Chapter 4: Drafting

This chapter goes over writing the first draft of an essay. When going over your first draft you should reconsider your audience and purpose and focus on your subject. There are three part to a basic essay structure which are:

1. The opening is where you engage your reader, establish your direction by identifying the topic, deepening the issue and acknowledging other views, get to the point by stating your thesis.

2. The middle of the essay consists of advancing your thesis, testing your ideas by raising questions, and considering alternatives, and support your main points. You build a coherent structure and use different levels of details to clarify your main point.

3. The ending is where you reassert the main point, remind the reader of your purpose and rephrase your thesis. Urge the reader, show the implications, look ahead, and list the benefits. Then complete and unify your message.
